How to Protect Your Instagram Account: 7 Rules for 2026

Why Protecting the Account Matters

An Instagram account with thousands of followers, content built over years, and customers arriving through it is a business asset in every sense. A hack or an unexpected ban can cause serious financial and reputational damage. The best protection is prevention. The following 7 rules are the minimum every account owner must implement.

Rule 1: A Strong Password + Two-Factor Authentication

Your password is the first line of defense. Choose a long, unique password (12 characters or more recommended) — a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and special characters. Never use the same password on more than one site.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is mandatory. Go to Settings → Accounts Center → Password and security → Two-factor authentication. The official options: an authenticator app (like Google Authenticator), preferable to SMS which is exposed to SIM swaps; verification via WhatsApp; and since 2025, Passkeys: passwordless biometric sign-in.

Rule 2: Don’t Log In Through Suspicious Links

Phishing is the most common method for hacking Instagram. Someone sends you an email or message that looks like it’s from Instagram — "your account will be disabled, verify here" — and you click and enter your password. Instagram’s two official golden rules: "Instagram will never send you a DM": any private message "from Instagram" is a scam; and any email can be verified in settings under "Emails from Instagram": an official list of every genuine email sent to you in the last 14 days.

Rule 3: Review App Permissions

Over the years, you may have granted access to dozens of third-party apps. Some may no longer exist, may have been sold, or turned into malicious tools. Go to Settings → Website Permissions → Apps and Websites and see what’s connected. Remove any app you don’t recognize or use.

Rule 4: A Secured Backup Email

Your email address is a key to your Instagram account. If someone gains access to your email, they can reset your Instagram password. Make sure your email account is also protected with 2FA, and update the email address on Instagram to one only you control.

Rule 5: Stay Within the Terms of Service

Instagram can ban an account that violates the terms of service — even one that was never hacked. Avoid posting content that looks like spam, don’t use follow/unfollow bots, and don’t post copyrighted content without permission. Take a few minutes to read Instagram’s policies — it can save a lot of trouble.

Rule 6: Run Security Checkup and Monitor Activity

Instagram has an official tool called Security Checkup that walks you through login activity, profile details, and recovery contacts all at once. In addition: Accounts Center → Password and security → "Where you’re logged in" — check for logins from unfamiliar locations. A login from a foreign country? Log it out and change your password immediately. Check this at least once a month. It’s also worth checking Account Status: the tool that shows whether the account has any restrictions.

Rule 7: Periodic Backups

Instagram lets you download a full copy of all your data: photos, stories, messages, followers, and more. Go to Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download Your Information. Back up at least once a month. If the account is ever hacked, you’ll have a saved copy of all your content.
